Singles League Week 1 Results

Division One: We had a couple of postponements so we will have catch-up matches to play later. In the matches that were played Martin Smith repeated his narrow 4-3 victory over Dev Chadha that he performed last season. Scotty “The Dogs” Yardley came back from 2-0 down to defeat Craig Wilson in the deciding frame to take the win points, 4-3. Paul Maher also came from behind to defeat the Div Two 2nd place finisher and the winner of last year’s Singles League Knockout Handicap Rob Walsh, 5-2. If a stranger had walked in the Lady Haig pool room last night they may have mistaken me for a pool player! Somehow I manage six frames in a row against last two seasons 3rd place finisher Keith “The Wonder” Walls to win 6-1.

Division Two:In an early match between Dean Hardesty & Nick Wienel every frame went against the break! Fortunately for Nick, Dean had won the toss and broke first which meant Nick won 4-3. Claire Dormer was always in control of her match with Shaun Tuffnell, never being behind and taking the match 5-2. Claire played a 2nd match later in the evening and came back from 2-1 down to take the match against Odhran Bryne 4-3. County C teammates Jez Hill & Trevor Dias played each other and at 1-1 Jez strung 5 frames in a row together to win 6-1. Trevor quickly shrugged off the defeat and in a 2nd match of the night came from 1-0 down against Scott Vann to lead 3-1 before winning the match 4-3. It wasn’t Scott’s night as he also played James Townsend who was on fire and won 6-1. Lee “The Grinder” Greenwood took on singles league debutant Steve Prior and took the first 5 frames before Steve started to find his feet and took the last two, the Grinder winning 5-2.

Division Three:John Barnett got off to a flyer against John Cornell leading 2-0 but the old boy levelled at 2-2 before John Barnett had the pressure on again to lead 3-2 but big John Cornell handled the pressure to take the last two frames and the match 4-3. John Barnett played a 2nd game on the night against new boy James Graham and managed three frames in a row when 2-1 down and eventually won the match 4-3. Tom Carter, also new to the league had a battle with Tony Price, Tom led 1-0 then was 2-1 down then led 3-2 before Tony took the last two frames to take the match 4-3. Jason Hawkins was solid in his match with Mark Murphy and always led finally taking the match 5-2. In the last match of the evening two new players to the league Elliott Snell & Ann Middleton thrashed out another close match. Elliott went 1-0 up, Ann hit back to go 2-1 up, Elliott took the next 2 for a 3-2 lead before Ann took it to a decider winning the 6th frame. In the final frame which looked like it could go either way, Ann missed a fine cut altogether and Elliot took the opportunity and the match 4-3.
