STEVE PLATT 01/09/1948 to 12/09/2007 (Aka Splatty, Splatman , Spongebob, Hank Marvin, Do you think he saurus, Sid Little, Hissing Sid, Unaurthdoxasaurus & You can go your own way) Where can I start my left hand man & best mate for many years has been taken from myself and all of us, He passed away on the afternoon of Wed 12th September. It had been the biggest battle of his life the endless fight with the big C and even from the earliest time of myself knowing him he had been fighting it. He has left behind a loving wife Enid, caring dog Ming, His close friends James & Stuart Harness, their Mum & Nan, Scott (the Dogs) Yardley, Alison Owens, Many many others and myself. Steve’s early life was always surrounded in mystery and I will endeavour to enlighten some of the brighter points, Splatty was born in Blackpool and lived near the town centre and went to School locally. He joined the Army after leaving school and was in the Army band he served a long stint and spent many years travelling the empire and several postings in the local barracks at Windsor, On finishing his time in the Army he decided that he liked Windsor and moved into one of many of the places he lodged and lived at in the area. Steve also set up his own little business window cleaning you would always see him up a ladder or in one of the local bookies, I could always find him it was like clockwork I first met Splatman yes you guessed it playing pool he was playing for the Haymill club in Burnham, then moved into the second string team at the Alma in Windsor where we played most day against each other and had a few beers, When both teams moved to the Willows Caravan park it wasn’t long before we had him playing for the Willow Wanderers as Vice Captain as a team we were quite formidable, winning many title in the Windsor pool league, TVPA and the Renegade.P.L.S & D and being loved by landlords everywhere for our frivolity and drinking antics. Steve also played in the Royal Berkshire county pool association for many years in the A team and was the Secretary and at meetings always had good points to raise about improvements and who’s round was it next. Steve was also a keen visitor of the local snooker hall in Windsor and we spent an occasional late night at the bar (ha ha). Steve then met the love of his life at a friends wedding in Gloucestershire Enid, He came back all smiles (well all gums at that time) and it wasn’t to long before all his friends met her. After a whirlwind romance they decided to move to Spain together and so in Feb 2005 they left for a sunny climate. Steve and Enid returned briefly to England to get married in 2006 near her old Gloucestershire home. They returned to Spain and had been in contact with all their friends until the terrible news I was informed about on the 9th September. I spoke to Slatty on the morning of the10th September he tried to be as upbeat as he could calling me names as we joked about old times and stupid things that we had done, Splatty told me the doctors had said 2 weeks to 2 months so was in shock that only 1 ½ days later he had passed away. On the 13th September the pool match between our team the Windsor Ex services Wanderers and Windsor Ex Nomads most of his closes pool friends had a moment to reflect and say a few words. As a mark of respect we all drank a toast to Splatty with his favourite tipple Guinness Steve has been cremated in his new homeland of Spain, There is expected to be a memorial service in Gloucestershire and I will inform everyone via our Berkshire Web site so please keep a vigilant eye open for information. Everyone Steve got to be friends with will miss him and I hope he is spreading the good word of pool to the angels above. Steve my old mate you will always be in my heart and the memories of you will live on and on and the stories will still be told.
In loving memory Robert Uzzell |
